With a ZIG and a ZAG and a ZIP-ZAP-ZOOOOOOOM! They come at MIDNIGHT...not sunrise or noon. Meet my seven very special characters for the days of the week as they make their grand entrance one by one shooting across the night sky in WHERE DO THE MONDAYS GO? Children love the intro repeat rhyme and memorize it in no time during my author/storytime events. Of course, everyone has their favorite character. I always love to hear about their favorite character and what they in particular find special about it. As both the author and the creator of the Greenwich Super-Duper Days, I am often asked which character is my favorite. It is very hard for me to choose since they each have such unique qualities. If I had to choose - my favorite would have to be Super-Duper MONDAY since he was the first one of the group that I created and my inspiration for the rest of the day of the week characters. Also, MONDAY has always been perceived as the "underdog day" and he deserves to feel just as super as the rest of the days of the week! MONDAYS COME Sometimes they have a crooked frown. Sometimes they feel like upside down. Sometimes they paint the sky with gray. WATCH OUT! They can splash your day! Monday's game is TIC-TAC-TOE. The criss-cross game with X and O. Give Mondays super games to play. They will fly and laugh and say, "It's a super-duper day!" As everyone does - I love a good surprise. When I share the picture above of Super-Duper MONDAY with children or adults - I always ask them if they see anything special about him. As they start staring at him trying to figure it out - I give them a clue - sharing the fact that his hair is big swooping M's...then they suddenly smile when they see it....the letters for MONDAY which are blended into the character art work. Every character in the book has the respective day name blended/hidden in the character art work. Once everyone learns this, they are very excited to go to the next character to see what they look like and then look for the letters. I remember how I chuckled to myself when I wrote the rhyme for Super-Duper THURSDAY. THURSDAYS COME When they stomp and kick and pout, and tiny fireballs drip from their snout... Ring Dr. Doodles. Don't delay. Have them checked out right away! If their tongues have big black spots, you know for sure they have the knots. If their scales are brittle and pale, it's a definite case of dragon tail! The cure for both is simple and quick. One big CAN of chicken noodle soup will do the trick! Super-Duper WEDNESDAY is always a favorite with the girls. She really rocks with big spikey W's for her hair, a super-duper hot pink outfit, goggle glasses and black boots. Below is Super-Duper WEDNESDAY's rhyme. They climb the cliffs at Cupid's Bow. The day is long with their W in tow. Everyone cheers when they reach the top. They drag up W - it goes KER-PLOP! It's a wind in their face - super-slide ride as they flip and do tricks down the mountainside. They ride the air waves. They surf the air sea. They fly like the eagle - wild, proud and free! If you are a parent, teacher, librarian or educator, check out my web site at www.wheredothemondaysgo.com where you can view all of the characters and find out the story behind the story. The teachers I have shared WHERE DO THE MONDAYS GO? with are very excited to have this book for their library to introduce children to the days of the week. There are so many elements weaved into it including colors, places, time and most importantly - feelings. The ryhme below for Super-Duper SUNDAY holds a special place in everyone's heart and I feel it is a positive message all can relate to with regards to HOPE and renewal. SUNDAY COMES They rise in orange fashion but yellow is their passion. They sweep up all the wind. They mop up all the rain. They tuck the clouds in bed. They paint a sunset train. They light up every sky spreading beams of hope and try! Space Dragon by Patricia Sloan - All Rights Reserved - Art Work Published on Elfwood.com August 31, 2005 SECRET PLACE There is a secret place where all the days reside. In a magic world, they play, they fly, they hide. Rainbows are the windows. Mountains are the grass. Clouds are the rooftop. Words are the looking glass. - Patricia Sloan Well, it's time for me to close here - THANK YOU for taking the time to read my blog about WHERE DO THE MONDAYS GO?
The ending answers the title/question when I take you with SUNDAY to tag a MONDAY to start a NEW week in their secret hiding place - where time begins!. Where does time begin?...well I certainly cannot spoil the final surprise so you will just have to read the book to find out! WISHING EVERYONE A SAFE & HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON! - 2012 Sincerely, Patricia Sloan The Holidays always bring back childhood memories for me. I was thinking about a time - way, way, back :) when I was in about third or fourth grade. We were assigned the task of selecting a poem and then had to recite it from memory in front of the class. This was especially difficult for me as I was extremely shy as a child and the thought of having stand up in front of my classmates was absolutely terrifying! My family was very supportive and suggested different poems they thought might be good, however, I just wanted to find the shortest one I could and get it over with. My anticipation grew as "Poem Day" was fast approaching and after reading poem after poem - they were starting to become an unwelcome read until....I read those very first words... in that very first poem....that touched my heart for the very first time.
I remember struggling to memorize it and becoming very frustrated. I repeated it and repeated it until I finally I had it down...and then came "Poem Day" and I was so excited. One by one the teacher called each student's name and finally my name was called. I slowly walked to the front of the class and gave my teacher a hand written copy of the poem I was going to recite and then I turned around and met what seemed like a thousand eyes staring at me. I just stood there. I could feel the tears starting to swell up in my eyes. Fortunately, my teacher immediately recognized my fear and helped me by introducing the title of my poem and the author's name to the class and asked if she could read aloud the first verse with me. This truly helped me focus on the words to the poem and before I knew it I had finished and everyone started clapping and I was so proud. I also have a recent family memory I would like to share with you. The graduation of my son from High School - 2011. This High School graduation ceremony was very special in that it would be the last one I would be attending for one of my children - my youngest son was graduating. The ceremony was held in a smaller location as the graduating class was small. I had arrived early and made sure I had a front row seat. There were the special honors and speeches....and then I heard those very first words, in that very first poem, that touched my heart for the very first time - they were reciting the poem I had to read aloud so many years ago....THE ROAD NOT TAKEN by Robert Frost. Later, one by one they called each student's name and finally my son's name was called. I watched as he walked up on the stage and accepted his diploma and everyone started clapping and I could feel tears of joy starting to swell up in my eyes and I was so proud. Thank you for letting me share...and remember to try and make it a Super-Duper Day! Sincerely - Patricia Sloan It is such a great feeling to have the WHERE DO THE MONDAYS GO? web site finally up and running. It has been an incredibly long journey to get my first children's book published, however, in reality I know my journey has really just begun.
I recently had my first author/story time at Barnes & Noble here in Houston, Texas. Prior to the event, I learned that authors don't typically have business cards. Authors have book marks which they use just like business cards. The book mark should have information printed on the back with a short summary on what your book is about, where your book is available for purchase, the ISBN numbers, and ideally, your own web site address with direct links to purchase your book. I had neither. I knew I had to start working on both immediately! I found a great site, www.iprint.com, where I could design my own book mark. You have to create an account, but once you do, you can save your design(s) to their site and update/edit them later if needed. I uploaded the picture I wanted on the front of my book mark and then inserted text for the title of the book and the author/illustrator information. I wanted my Super-Duper MONDAY cartoon character on the back of the book mark so I uploaded his picture and listed the pertinent information underneath. For example - what the book was about (AN EDUCATIONAL STORY BOOK ON THE DAYS OF THE WEEK), where the type of book (E-BOOK/PRINTED BOOK) could be found (Barnes & Noble, Amazon, itunes iBOOKSTORE) along with the respective ISBN number. Since this was the first time I had visited iprint, I did check out their reviews from other customers before deciding to use them. I also placed a smaller order of 250 book marks. I wanted to make sure even with the reviews, that I would be happy with the quality of the paper/printing - which of course I would not know about for sure until I received my first order. I am very happy to say that I have used iPrint several times now for my book marks and I just ordered 500 of them with my with my new web site address now on them! - www.wheredothemondaysgo.com. It was a challenge to say the least, however, I have completed my web site and my book marks....give me five...give me ten....no give me fifteen!!!!!!!!!!!!!..... :) Note: If you have any comments regarding how to prepare for a successful author/story time event and other tips to share with first time authors/writers, we would love to hear from you. Have a great 4th of JULY holiday! Sincerely, Patricia Sloan |
